Congratulations to our 5th graduating class! We graduated 47 awesome STEM students yesterday afternoon. The STEM Academy is just as excited about your future as you are and we are proud of all the hard work and dedication you have shown throughout these past four years. We hope you had an amazing four years at NHS. Know that you will always be a part of the STEM family! We wish you lots of love and luck as you continue your journey.

Leila Aghili
Senior Leila Aghili will be attending Texas A&M University in the fall. She was presented with a $12,000 scholarship from Texas A&M. Leila’s favorite projects were the school of the future her freshman year and her rocket project junior year. When asked about her favorite memory from STEM, she said it is “how many true friends I’ve made that are going to college with me. I also love how I can call my teachers my friends.” Michael Frey
Senior Michael Frey has been accepted into the University of North Texas and Ohio State University. He will be focusing on mechanical engineering while in college. Michael said that he is going to miss Mr. Klingseisen the most because of “how he greets me with a bright smile every day.” Nathaniel Blauser
STEM senior Nathan Blauser, has been accepted into Oklahoma State University, University of Texas at Arlington, Texas A&M, and Colorado University. Nathan has earned $36,000 for the University of Oklahoma, $50,000 for OSU, and $24,000 for the University of Texas at Arlington. In the fall he will be attending University of Texas at Arlington. Nathan will be majoring in mechanical engineering. In five years, he wants to be starting a career with a car company as an engineer. He wants to eventually become a chief project engineer on sports cars, having been motivated by Dave Patrick. Nathan is most excited about getting to meet new people and form new habits on his own. His favorite project was the trebuchet project freshman year. Being able to design, build, and test his trebuchet was the most fun he has ever had in STEM. Nathan’s favorite memory was when Mrs. Helmick told him and his friends that they couldn’t go float the river. All of the STEM teachers have had an important role in shaping his future. Mrs. Helmick certainly struck him with fear the first few days of school, and he thanks her for that because, otherwise, these last few years in STEM wouldn’t have happened. Israel Brown
Israel Brown is a senior student of STEM who has been accepted to Arizona State University, Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, University of Texas at Arlington, and the University of North Texas, which he has decided to attend. He has also secured the Emerald Eagle Scholarship to help lessen the financial burden of going to university. Israel will be studying mechanical engineering; he wants to take the skills he learns and travel the world. Some of his favorite memories of his time in high school are participating in the Aerospace I rocket project and the many experiences he had during car trips between robotics competitions. Israel would like to thank teachers Kimberly Garrett and Jim Brown for "dealing with all of the problems I gave them and never giving up on me." Dylan Craven
Dylan Craven has been accepted Tuskegee University in Alabama to study biochemical engineering. Dylan has received a $5000 renewable academic scholarship and has applied for several other scholarships. In college Dylan plans to focus on his goals to become biochemical engineer as he plans to earn his master’s and plans to intern with a company and then enter the workforce straight out of college. Something that Dylan plans to do once he graduates is to unlock a new chapter in his life. Dylan has Ms. Rix and Mrs. Helmick to thank for the support they have given him in his four years of STEM as he says that they were always there to help him from small problems to applying for colleges. Jonathan Curneal
Senior Jonathan Curneal has been accepted to Texas A&M in College Station. While there, he plans on studying mechanical and electrical engineering. In five years, Jonathan wants to be a senior robotics engineer with the hope of creating his own company for robotic engineering. Rebecca Dalrymple
Senior Rebecca Dalrymple will be attending the University of West Florida where she plans to obtain degrees in anthropology and archaeology. After college Rebecca wants to start a full time job and travel the world with that job. She has had many great memories from her time in STEM; however, her favorite project was the junior year rocket project because of how exciting it was and how she says she will never forget all the great memories it created. One of Rebecca’s favorite teachers was Ms. Lloyd because she changed her for the better and encouraged her to grow as a person and experience new things. Alexia Mayes
Senior Alexia Mayes will attend Tarrant County College in the fall. She will get college benefits/reimbursements from UPS paying up to $25,000 of her education. She plans on majoring in biology and hopes to still be living in Texas and working with animals (possibly at a zoo) in five years. She also hopes to be engaged or married by then and have a herd of goats. She looks forward to being more independent after high school and going to school with people who share her same interests. Alexia's favorite STEM projects were the dream house project, the trebuchet project, and the GoPro bridle clip project because she was very proud of her work and the amazing outcome of each. Since she moved from California a month before her senior year, Alexia is thankful for all of the friends she made in STEM and the close relationships she formed with her teachers. Both have provided her with memories she will never forget. STEM teachers Jacque Delong and Jim Brown made the biggest impact on Alexia. She said Ms. Delong was a fun teacher who "made the class so enjoyable." She not only helped Alexia with AutoCAD, but she would lift her spirits by giving her a hug. Mr. Brown taught Alexia her freshman and junior year. He would stay after school allowing her to work on her projects and would push her to do her best. Austin-Tyler Navarrette
Austin Navarrette, a senior in the STEM Academy, has been accepted to Case Western Reserve University, Vanderbilt University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Southern Methodist University, Baylor University, Beloit College and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Austin will be attending CWRU in the fall on a $114,000 scholarship. He has received $556,000 from scholarships including ones from SMU, BU, and BC. Austin will strive to receive a major in civil engineering with a minor in business management. He plans on being at Vanderbilt working on his master’s degree in five years. Austin is excited to move to Cleveland, Ohio, play college football, and go to a fantastic school. Austin says the most memorable project in STEM was the One Pound, One Mile Rocket project. He also enjoyed the field trip to the Outdoor Learning Center for the trebuchet launch his freshman year. Austin would like to thank all of his STEM teachers. He said, “You all have supported us and made our four years awesome!” Lexis Norton
Lexis Norton will be studying mechanical engineering at Texas Christian University, but she has also been accepted to The University of Alabama, Baylor University, Colorado State University of Pueblo, Hawai’i Pacific University, and Abilene Christian University. Lexis has received $10,000 for Wayland Baptist University, $16,000 for Hawai’i Pacific University, and $26,000 for Abilene Christian University. She wants to be living somewhere beautiful and be working for Ford Motor company five years from now. Of her time in STEM, The Trebuchet Project from freshman year and the time J.D. Eggert mispronounced the word circumference sticks out in her memory. She would like to thank STEM facilitators Jacque DeLong, Jim Brown, Aylor Rix, and Casey Helmick for making her STEM experience possible and enjoyable. Jordan Varner
Jordan Varner is a senior in the STEM Academy, who has been accepted for University of North Texas in Denton and University of Texas in Austin. In the fall he will be attending the University of North Texas. Jordan will be majoring in ecology for environmental science. In five years he wants to be starting his career and getting a house. Jordan is eager to begin the next phase of his life after graduation. His favorite memory and project was the zoo project, because that is what he ultimately wants to do for his career and he thought it was inspirational to learn the natural environment of animals in order to replicate them in a captive environment. Ryan Yarborough
Ryan Yarborough plans to attend Tarrant County College this fall. He wants to earn his master’s in business, hoping to own a business of his own one day. He also wants to have a family and own a lot of cars. Ryan’s favorite memory while in STEM was his junior rocket launch. He is going to miss Coach Stratton and Coach McCready, because they helped him grow up and become the man that he is today. Kevin Christian
Graduating student Kevin Christian will be attending University of North Texas after working hard in the STEM Academy. By attending UNT he will work towards to acquiring a biochemical engineering degree, and after that he will in five years become a high ranking employee of a research and development company that synthesizes new drugs to fight diseases. However, before Kevin is in the war of fighting diseases, he had some great memories of being in STEM. The most memorable was him working on the dream house project as it “took all [of] the knowledge [he] had accumulated throughout the year” in order to complete the project to all of the specifications. Then he remembers that Mr. Klingseisen, sophomore STEM history teacher, was the one who motivated him to be his best in a different manner because Mr. Klingseisen always seemed to know what he was thinking and pushed him with a “friendly pat on the back” kind of way. JD Eggert
Stem senior, JD Eggert was accepted by the University of Texas, the University of California Irvine, and the University of North Texas. He plans on attending UT and will focus on getting a degree in computer science. In five years, he hopes to be a computer scientist at a successful and profitable company, such as Google or Microsoft. He is most excited about being independent and making his own choices to guide his life. The most memorable project he remembers from STEM is the rocket project because he learned a lot about teamwork, as well as how to properly handle stress. He would like to thank Coach Hughes, not only for being a great biology teacher, but for also being a source of “good vibes” that helped a lot during sophomore year and pushing him forward to do is best. Jarrett Hanson
Jarrett Hanson, a STEM Academy senior, has been accepted to Texas A&M in College Station, as well as the University of North Texas. Despite a $7,000 scholarship from UNT, he plans on attending Texas A&M in the upcoming fall semester. He intends on acquiring a degree in mechanical engineering, leading to a career in automotive engineering. The Punkin’ Chunkin’ (trebuchet) project was his most memorable project throughout STEM because this was the first time everyone came together as a team to make something great. He would like to thank Mrs. DeLong for always being the “go-to” teacher and Mrs. Mercer for challenging them, and helping them become better students and people. Kenneth Kinneer
Senior, Kenneth Kinneer, is ready for any journey his life takes him on. He hopes to meet new interesting people and experience different cultures. Kenneth’s favorite project in STEM is Ms. Mercer’s magazine project from freshman year because it was “interesting, engaging, and, challenging.” His favorite memory in STEM is presenting his “Dream House” design and showing off his hard work. Kenneth would like to thank Coach Lutkenhaus for his advice, dedication, and positive influence. Sean Riggen
Sean Riggen has been accepted into both UNT and Texas Tech University. He has aspirations to be a professional musician playing the tuba or working as a successful engineer. Riggen has a deep drive to further his education and follow his own path. Above all, he wants to earn a degree in mechanical engineering and be the best at what he does. One of Sean’s favorite memories of STEM would be the trebuchet project and as he describes “it was a different and unique experience that allowed us to enjoy ourselves while learning about the wonderful topic of physics.” Richard Warren
Senior, Richard Warren IV, has been accepted into University of North Texas and will be attending there in the fall. He plans to major in biomedical engineering. In five years from a career stand point he would like to be in any research field in biotech. Richard is most excited about gaining independence after graduating from high school. His favorite project in STEM was Ms. Lloyds “Future Innovation” project. The best memory he has from STEM is the close friends and just hanging out with people that he is so close to. Richard would like to thank Mr. Blackmor and Mrs. Morrissey for being amazing teachers. Kyle Hoselton
Kyle Hoselton is a senior in the STEM Academy and is eagerly awaiting responses from the following academic institutions: A&M University, ITT Tech, Texas Tech and Universal Technical Institute. He is interested in the possibility of attending Texas A&M. Kyle plans on majoring in robotic engineering or mechanics. His long term five year goal is to have completed college and to be working in an entry level engineering position and moved out of his parents house. Kyle says that his biggest concern is “ growing up because of all the responsibilities of being an adult and being out alone in the big world.” His favorite STEM Academy project was the chemistry movie project and his favorite memory from STEM is filming the project, while witnessing a classmate “slipping on a rug and going airborne.” Kyle would like to thank Mrs. Helmick and all the other STEM teachers for accepting him in the program and for teaching him how to be an engineer. He would also like to extend a special thanks to the wrestling coach Dan McCready. Kyle added, "Even though I've only been in the sport for two years, it is been a great experience.” Konrad Mann
Konrad Mann, a Senior in the STEM Academy, will be attending Wichita Area Technical College this fall. He is looking forward to majoring in NDT ( Non-Destructive Testing) and predictive NDT. Although Konrad is very excited about attending college, he is most excited about the income his education will provide for him. Long term in five years, Konrad says, “ I would like to have a stable job with a house close to my job.” Konrad’s favorite STEM project was the Product Design project because it was his first project. Konrad would like to thank Mr. Brown for all of his help throughout the years. Samuel N'Hpang
Samuel N’hpang will be attending the University of North Texas. He has earned a scholarship from BBU. This fall he will be attending North Texas where he will study agricultural and electrical engineering. In five years, he plans to be working for an architecture firm. He is excited about becoming an engineer, and experiencing graduation, and living on his own. His favorite memory was the trap car race. He also enjoyed Mr. Brown because he always put him back on track. Joshua Pratt
STEM Senior Joshua Pratt has been accepted into Spartan College and has gained a $44,000 grant. While in college he would like to pursue aviation electrical engineering and sees himself working in Texas for Lockheed Martin. Joshua is looking forward to being free and doing things that he wants and having more time. One of the most memorable experiences for Joshua was the rocket project and being able to work as a team to watch everything work out at the end and see the rocket take off. |
Bashir Dennis
Bashir Dennis will be attending for Texas State University in the fall. He plans on majoring in aerospace engineering and has received a military scholarship for ROTC. He is excited about finding his purpose in life after graduation and experiencing the feeling of “taking on” the world on his own. Five years from now he sees himself as a Border Patrol Agent near the Texas border or a successful business owner. Bashir’s favorite memory in the STEM Academy was working together and doing team activities at the Outdoor Learning Center. His favorite project would be the aerospace One Mile High project which sparked his interest in aerospace and the components that go inside a rocket. He gives a special thanks to Mrs. Helmick, Mrs. Delong, and Mrs. Rix for supporting him and making him push himself to excel. He would also like to thank his swim coach Kristi Pottorff for showing him the meaning of character and bringing out the best in people. Garrett Garcia
Senior Garrett Garcia has been accepted into the University of North Texas in Denton. He would like to focus on earning a degree in architectural engineering so that he is able to work at an engineering firm. Garret is looking forward to getting away from the high school experience and getting into college. Memories from projects such as the trebuchet were one of his favorites that taught him the basics of how STEM would be for the next three years to come. Garrett would like to thank Mrs. Garrett, Mrs. Delong, and Ms. Lloyd for always being there for him and getting him ready for college. Zachary Griffin
Senior, Zach Griffin has been accepted to University of North Texas, University of Arizona, University of Arkansas, Texas Tech University, Texas A&M University, and Baylor University. Zach has received scholarships from Baylor, Texas Tech, and Arizona but he plans on going to Texas A&M majoring in Computer Science. He sees himself either working in the Navy or for a defense contractor. Zach is excited about getting away from Haslet, TX, and being exposed to new experiences. Zach recalls his favorite project being the Rube Goldberg project from his freshman year. His favorite memory from STEM was the One Pound, One Mile Rocket project; he loved rushing around to get his rocket ready for launch. Zach would like to thank Mrs. Helmick because she dealt with them for so long. Kyle Hadley
STEM Senior, Kyle Hadley, has been accepted into Tarrant County College. In the fall Kyle will be attending TCC’s south campus. He wants to receive a Bachelor of Science in nursing. In five years, he hopes to be out of college with a bachelor’s degree and to be in the United States Air Force as a combat rescue officer. Kyle is not really excited about graduating, but more so relieved. He is glad to be able to move on and explore the world. His favorite project was the community service project with Ms. Mercer. As a part of the project, he recalls donating toys to a foster home in Keller for Christmas. Kyle said this is the only project on which he received a hundred in her class. His favorite memory in STEM is learning to use Photoshop CS4. Kyle would like to thank every STEM facilitator for breaking him down as an individual and building him back up as a team. Elizabeth Heifer
Elizabeth Helfer has received a scholarship from the United States Air Force. She plans to attend immediately after high school, becoming a load master. In the next five years she plans to be in the Air Force boot camp. One of her favorite projects while being a part of the STEM family was building and launching the rocket because of the real-life, physical result. Her favorite memory was the team building days because it was always fun to work with other people and overcome challenges. Elizabeth thanks Mr. Brown because he has been there for her since the first day of STEM Camp when she showed up late after making a lizard friend in the bathroom. Cauner McDonald
Cauner McDonald has been accepted into Oklahoma Wesleyan University, University of North Texas, and University of Texas at Arlington and has decided to attend UTA for the fall. He has received UTA’s Freshman Honors Scholarship and he will be working towards a major in architecture. Cauner hopes to be in an urban architecture firm in five years. He recalls his favorite project and memory from his four years in STEM, his transonic project from his senior year. From his four years in STEM, Cauner would like to thank Mrs. Garrett and Mr. Brown. He says, “They helped me throughout the past four years and taught me how to cope with the stress of STEM.” Andres Montoya
Andres Montoya is a STEM senior who will be attending the University of North Texas in the fall of 2017. Andres plans to be an aeronautical engineer and would like to work for Lockheed Martin after he graduates college. He said that the most exciting thing about graduating is “not having to take 7 stressful classes every day.” His favorite project in STEM was the video game project because he enjoyed the creative and imaginative aspects of the project. The STEM senior Andrew Murray will be attending Texas A&M and hope to get a degree in engineering. He plans on becoming a mechanical engineer and hopes to join the military as a combat engineer one day. One of Andrews’s favorite memories was eating s’mores around a fire with his friends during the trebuchet launch at the OLC. Keellie Quinn
Senior, Keellie Quinn, has been accepted into University of Texas Arlington and will be attending there during the fall. She would like to major in architecture. In five years she would hopes to be a big-time architect that will be designing skylines. Her favorite project was the Clay Comb project in Mrs. Delong’s class because she did it with her two best friends and received money as an award. Keellie is most excited about the freedom she will receive when she graduates from high school. Isaac Thomas
Isaac Thomas will be studying computer science at the University of North Texas and will receive a scholarship of $3000 dollars. After college, he hopes to have a job working from home, allowing him to be close to his parents, or live by the mountains because he enjoys snowboarding. He said that he is the most excited about the chance to meet new people and form new friendships after graduation. He also said that his favorite project was the create-a-game project because it gave them a final product that was enjoyable and inspirational. He would like to thank Mrs. Garrett for teaching him and helping him for four years. Axel Besa
Axel Besa has been accepted into the University of Texas at Arlington, as well as Texas Tech. However, he plans to attend the University of Texas at Arlington in the fall ane major in mechanical engineering. In the next five years, he wants to be working in a mechanical engineering position, hopefully for a foreign car company, and working on a new car design. Axel is most excited about finally being able to learn things that are specific to his career field. The project he enjoyed the most was the project in biology where Ayo and himself created the “Evo Wiper.” His favorite memory in STEM is when Mr. Klingseisen convinced Ayo that he went to space and Ayo believed him. Axel would like to thank all of his previous teachers and especially Mrs. Helmick. Paul Cockrum
Paul Cockrum, a STEM senior, has been accepted into the University of Texas, along with a $12,000 per year grant from the university. He wants to earn a degree in linguistics, preferably a master’s or doctorate. After graduation, he is most excited for the freedom to meet new people and start fresh. The project he enjoyed most in STEM was Mrs. DeLong’s Dream House project because he was able to create a “really cool house; it was a great way to end the year.” One of his favorite memories from STEM was feeding the birds at the Fort Worth Zoo with his friends during sophomore year. Lastly, he would like to thank Mrs. Mercer, Mrs. Cline, and Mrs. DeLong for listening and helping him throughout his high school life. Brandon Garcia
Brandon Garcia has been accepted into Texas Tech University, Texas A&M Commerce, Texas A&M Kingsville, Texas A&M Corpus Christi, and Tarleton State. He will study Petroleum Engineering at Texas Tech University this fall. He also hopes, in five years, to be traveling around the world and living a luxurious lifestyle to his standards. Like most seniors, he is looking forward to freedom, new people, responsibilities, traveling, and having fun. Of all of the STEM projects, Brandon enjoyed the rocket project in Aerospace the most. Everyone has a favorite memory of STEM, some from the School of the Future Project and others from Showcase, but Brandon’s favorite memory was when Ayo fell at the rocket launch in Fredericksburg. Tanner Reinhardt
Tanner Reinhardt has been accepted into Texas A&M University, UNT, and the University of Texas at Arlington. However, he plans on attending Texas A&M to earn a degree in mechanical engineering with the help of a $5,000 UNT Excellence Scholarship. Tanner’s dream career is to be employed in a robotics engineering firm in an upcoming and future focused environment. Tanner’s end goal, however, would be to have a sustainable career where he can afford luxuries and fund his future grandchildren’s goals. His favorite memory of STEM is the STEM rocket project his junior year because it was a great experience and it felt like a vacation from school. Ayo Shittu-Durodoye
Ayo Shittu-Durodoye has been accepted into Texas A&M, Texas Tech, the University of North Texas, and the University of Texas at Arlington. He plans to attend UTA in the fall and will be studying computer engineering. In the next five years he sees himself as a teacher or working at a software firm. Whatever career he chooses, he hopes to do something “meaningful and impactful.” Ayo is anxious about the struggles of becoming an adult outside of high school, but he is also excited for what the future holds for him. During his years in STEM, his favorite project was the rocket projects because of “the process of making it and seeing it launch.” His favorite memory was the accumulation of all the times STEM as a whole went to the Outdoor Learning Center. Ayo wants to thank Mrs. Cook, Mrs. DeLong, Mr. Brown, Mr. Klingseisen, Ms. Rix, Coach Edwards, and Coach Hatch for all being loving, supporting, and tough on him to help him become the best version of himself he could possibly be. Melisa Tucker
Melisa Tucker has been accepted into the University of Alabama. She has aspirations to become a mechanical engineer after serving in the U.S Coast Guard. She has many great memories about the STEM Academy after being in the academy for four years. However, her favorite experience would be going to Fredericksburg for the STEM rocket project. She plans on utilizing the G.I Bill after her service in the U.S military to fund her education so she can earn a degree in mechanical engineering. Nickolas Blair
Nickolas Blair has been accepted into Texas Tech University in Lubbock. He would like to focus on bio-medical engineering while also working on his master’s degree and possibly pursue a minor in business. Nickolas is looking forward to living on his own and adapting more responsibilities than usual when in college. Looking back on his high school years, Nickolas’s favorite memory from the STEM Academy is limping down the hall way with a bloody knee after tripping. He would like to thank Mrs. Delong for being an amazing teacher and a great mentor. Allison Gray
Allison Gray has been accepted into Truman State University, Wichita State University, Iowa State University, Houston Baptist University, and Sweet Briar College. She also earned the Truman scholarship for $14,000 a year, $24,500 a year for Sweet Briar, and $190,000 total for Truman State University. She wishes to major in linguistics and computer science. Allison views herself in New Zealand in five years as a hopeful place to visit at least. One of her favorite projects of STEM would be the trebuchet project she did in freshmen year. As she puts it “It was a fun and one of the first major projects we did.” William Humber
William Humber will be attending the University of Texas at Arlington. He has a scholarship that will earn him $4,000 a year and $2,000 a semester. He will be visiting the University of Texas at Arlington in the fall where he will proceed to learn about aerospace engineering. In five years he hopes to work for NASA or Lockheed Martin. He is looking forward to his senior trip and beginning his career. His favorite project was the zoo project because it included a field trip to the zoo and he really enjoyed the reptile house. He thanks Mr. Brown because he pushed him through the years and helped him become a good student. Diana Muhametaj
Diana Muhametaj will being attending St John’s University, and wants to major in Biology and Neuroscience. Five years from now she sees herself continuing her studies for her love of medicine and traveling different parts of the world. One of her greatest memories of STEM was 2013 Fall Festival in the OLC where she and her team won third place on Punkin’ Chunkin’ project. She wants to acknowledge Mrs. Rix for being sweet and wonderful and Mrs. Delong for being one of her greatest teachers and for being open, kind, and always energetic. Nathan Patzke
Nathan Patzke is a Senior at the STEM Academy and is very excited about the many universities in which he was accepted. In addition to being accepted at the universities, he received a number of scholarships including Baylor University, $63,786; University of Mary Hardin, $144,729; University of Arkansas, $48,765; Oklahoma State University, $12,568; Texas Christian University, $124,253; and Dallas Baptist University, $58,758. Nathan has decided to attend Baylor University, majoring in law. His long term, five year goal is to successfully complete the law program. Nathan's favorite STEM Project was the Dream House project, and his favorite memory from STEM was Junior Year Community Reveal. Senior Tobi Dornai has been accepted into UT Arlington while receiving a $6000 Outstanding Student Scholarship and will be attending there in the fall. During his time in college, Tobi wishes to obtain a degree in aerospace engineering and work for NASA or SpaceX where he also hopes to get an internship at during his time college. One of the things Tobi is most excited about after graduating is all the new opportunities that he will have now that he is no longer a high school student. One of Tobi Dornai's favorite projects was the Roanoke shopping mall project where students took only shipping containers and designed a two story mall for the city of Roanoke because of how they were able to create something out of shipping containers. One of Tobi’s favorite teachers in the STEM academy is Mrs. DeLong because she is always straight forward with everything and gets to the point and says what is needed to be said. Thomas Speicher
Thomas Speicher will be attending the University of North Texas. He will be focusing on mechanical energy engineering. In five years, he hopes to be out of working in the industry. He’s excited most about playing college hockey. The STEM project he enjoyed the most was the Lake House project because he felt like he felt he was most involved in designing a unique space. |
